December 17, 2001 -- The Department of Agriculture announced more than $260 million in loan and grant funds for 24 states to boost bioenergy production, expand rural business ventures and improve economic and community development. November 2001 -- Rural Development in North Dakota recently announced the award of a $1,712,000 Community Facilities grant for Turtle Mountain Community College to help expand its facility and enhance its Native American arts curriculum. Turtle Mountain Community College provides higher education services in fields that Native Americans need.

November 1, 2001 -- The Department of Agriculture announced funding for the eight National Centers of Excellence that help promote economic development in under-served rural communities.

September 27, 2001 -- Rural Development announced the approval of a $9 million business loan for the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in Pottsville, Pennsylvania. The Rural Development loan will provide funds needed to re-open portions of the mine and allow the return of 230 employees who have been laid off since January, 2001.

September 21, 2001 -- The Department of Agriculture announced the approval of a $5 million grant to the Alaska Energy Authority (AEA), a public corporation of the State of Alaska. AEA will use the funds to support their existing state-revolving loan fund, which provides low interest loans to remote rural communities to acquire adequate fuels supplies for local energy needs.
