Austin, Indiana

A Rural Enterprise Community

The AREC experienced tremendous growth during 2002. Among the new programs initiated are:

Junior Leaders of Austin (JLA)- A group of Austin Middle School Students (6 seventh graders and 6 eigth graders) meets once a month to discuss current issues in Austin. The JLA group handles special projects pertaining to community needs and participated in many AREC sponsored events.

Austin Youth Volunteer Corps-  A group of ninth and tenth grade Austin High School students meets twice a month with emphasis on youth leadership activities and hands on volunteering experience with local community projects.

Child Care Scholarship- A scholarship program that provides a direct subsidy for parents living within the AREC zone for child care. It allows for 12 weeks of financial assistance to working families and have helped eleven families in 2002.

Health Care Assistance Program-  A cooperative health care program with Scott Memorial Hospital providing medical services through Dr. Priscilla Villaroman in Austin, In 200, 25 individuals benefited from the program.
