Congressman Moran & USDA Rural Development Host Economic and Housing Forum

Salina, KS. December 17, 2002 - 1st District Congressman Jerry Moran and USDA Rural Development co-hosted an economic and housing forum in Salina. Rural Development Under Secretary Tom Dorr also attended the conference, delivering the keynote address where he discussed the emerging role of the Agency in economic growth and homeland security policy.

"USDA Rural Development is taking the lead role in economic development issues in rural Kansas. I am very pleased with the success of the programs being administered by Rural Development, and the positive impact they are making in Kansas", said Congressman Moran.

Under Secretary Dorr pointed out "the result of all this service is that we are providing a safe and abundant water supply; improving housing for rural residents; assisting fire and emergency management services in securing essential equipment; and partnering with individuals to create or retain needed jobs for Kansas. These are just a few of the many success stories of USDA Rural Development."

Briefing sessions covering Rural Development’s business loan and grant programs, along with the Agency’s rural housing opportunities, were discussed. A large crowd of attendees representing a wide range of business, educational, community and private interests were present for the event.

Rural Development State Director Banks commented, "USDA Rural Development is committed to aggressively administer its programs to advance economic development, promote housing opportunities and improve the quality of life in rural Kansas. Rural Development is pleased to present this conference to assist our State in achieving this important goal."
