Congressman Ryun Reviews Kansas Rural Development Projects

August 23, 2002 - Holton, KS. – 2nd District Congressman Jim Ryun toured a wide range of Kansas Rural Development projects over three counties today. In addition to visiting the numerous economic development and community facility operations, Mr. Ryun held a town hall meeting in Hiawatha focusing on economic issues facing rural Kansas.

Among several of the Rural Development funded projects inspected by Congressman Ryun was the renovations to the Hiawatha Hospital and the newly completed Public Wholesale Supply District #18 water treatment plant located in Holton. In total, the five projects viewed consist of an investment of $6.8 million and the creation/retention of 150 jobs in those communities.

"I am very supportive of Kansas Rural Development and the rural development provisions of the 2002 Farm Bill. USDA Rural Development programs offer our Kansas farm producers and rural communities an excellent the opportunity to enhance their economic development", Congressman Ryun told the attendees of the Hiawatha meeting.

Chuck Banks, State Director for USDA Rural Development commented, "The 2002 Farm Bill contains excellent economic development provisions for rural Kansas. Rural Development’s numerous grant and loan programs help promote more innovation and economic opportunities for rural area. Creating commerce and jobs in our rural communities is key to the prosperity of the entire State".

Kansas Rural Development has conducted a series of joint informational meetings with members of the state’s congressional delegation during the August recess.
