USDA Rural Development Announces $1,380,800 Funding
 For
Pomona Water System

February 20, 2003  – Topeka, KS. – USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks announced the City of Pomona has received a loan of $642,300.00 and grant of $738,500.00 through USDA Rural Development's Water and Waste Water Program to replace the water distribution system. Community Development Block Grant funds of $400,000.00 and applicant contribution of $15,900.00 will be used in conjunction with the project.

According to Martin Fee, Rural Development Specialist in the Lawrence office, approximately 60,000 feet of water line will be replaced, with 320 meters and 44 fire hydrants installed, to serve 923 local users.

"The project will ensure Pomona residents have access to a clean, safe, and reliable water source.  Rural Development loans and grants help rural communities retain jobs, create new jobs and ensure the safety and security of their citizens.  USDA Rural Development is pleased to be able to provide cities and towns in Kansas with the benefits Rural Utilities Service loans and grants provide," State Director Banks said.

Water and Wastewater loan and grant funds may be used to construct, enlarge, extend, or improve water and waste water systems in rural areas with a population of 10,000 or less.  These loans can be made to nonprofit organizations, state and federally recognized Indian tribes, and public entities.

USDA Rural Developments serves as the lead federal entity for rural development needs and administers financial and technical assistance through three agencies: Rural Housing Service, Rural Business-Cooperative Service and Rural Utilities Service.  For more information, visit our website at: www.rurdev.usda.gov/ks
