Storm Shelter Program Application Deadline Approaching

Topeka, KS. –  USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks announced today that the application deadline for the first round in the Agency’s 2003 Rural Storm Shelter Program is approaching.  The Agency must receive completed applications from interested rural homeowners by August 15th.

State Director Chuck Banks previously announced the establishment of the state Rural Storm Shelter Program, which can provide low interest loans to very-low income homeowners living in rural Kansas to help finance storm shelters.  The critical need for adding storm shelters to exiting homes was highlighted during a USDA Rural Development housing tour across the state earlier this summer.

“Severe weather can strike Kansas unexpectedly, and with the potential for serious consequences. The storms that struck our State earlier this year and the unfortunate loss of life underscores the need for improved home safety measures.  The installation of an approved storm shelter can offer Kansans added safety and security.  The Agency’s Rural Storm Shelter Program can provide eligible homeowners an excellent opportunity to better protect themselves and their families,” commented Banks.

For additional information regarding the Rural Storm Shelter Program, or other USDA Rural Development programs, individuals may call the Agency’s state headquarters at 785-271-2720 or log onto the state's Rural Development website at: www.rurdev.usda.gov/ks.
