USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT INVESTS $2.2 MILLION IN CRAWFORD COUNTY CLEAN WATER IMPROVEMENT PROJECTS

 

Franklin, KS -  USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks announced today the funding approval of two important clean water improvement projects in Crawford County totaling nearly $2.2 million.  The presentations, which were made in the communities of Franklin and Girard as part of Earth Day celebrations, were part of the Agency’s nationwide announcement of almost $200 million in project funding.

 

“The Agency’s Water & Waste Disposal Program helps communities keep pace with the critical needs of their citizens, ensuring Kansas residents will have access to a clean, safe and reliable water sources.  The funding of these important sewage collection projects in Crawford County will help promote economic growth of the whole area, support the construction of new homes, and enhance the overall quality of life for this area’s residents,” commented State Director Banks.

 

In the presentation at Franklin, Crawford County Sewer District No. 3 received a ceremonial check totaling $1.658 million to help fund improvements to the Franklin area’s waste collection system.  Funding for the District’s project will benefit approximately 155 rural users. Crawford County Sewer District No. 3 will receive a $703,000 loan and a $955,800 grant from USDA Rural Development.

 

In the presentation at Girard, Crawford County Sewer District No. 5 received a ceremonial check totaling totaling $591,000 to help fund improvements to the Radley and South Radley area’s waste collection system.  Funding for the District’s project will benefit approximately 62 rural users. Crawford County Sewer District No. 5 will receive a $231,300 loan and a $359,700 grant from USDA Rural Development.

 

“Waterways and groundwater resources in Kansas will be saved and protected for our children and future generations through the development of these new sewage collection systems," State Director Banks added.

 

Representatives from the offices of U.S. Senator Sam Brownback and 2nd District Congressman Jim Ryun were also present for both presentations.

 

Water and Wastewater loan and grant funds may be used to construct, enlarge, extend, or improve water and waste water systems in rural areas with a population of 10,000 or less.  These loans can be made to nonprofit organizations, state and federally recognized Indian tribes, and public entities.  For additional information regarding USDA Rural Development programs, individuals may call the Agency’s state headquarters at 785-271-2702 or log onto the state’s website at: www.rurdev.usda.gov/ks
