Energy Grant Program Deadline Approaching

Topeka, KS. – USDA Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks has announced the deadline for the Agency’s Renewable Energy Systems & Energy Efficiency Improvement Program is approaching. Applications submitted under this program must be completed and submitted with a postmark no later than July 19, 2004.

Eligible projects under the Renewable Energy Systems & Energy Efficiency Improvement Program include those that derive energy from a wind, solar, biomass, or geothermal source, or hydrogen derived from biomass or water using wind, solar, or geothermal energy sources. Applicants must be agricultural producers or rural small businesses, U.S. citizens or legal residents, who have demonstrated financial need. Agency grant funds may be used to pay up to 25% of the eligible project costs. Grant funding under this year’s program has been set at $22.8 million, with successful proposals selected on a national competitive basis.

“This is a time of enormous transformation in Kansas agriculture,” said State Director Banks. “Developing renewable energy opportunities is unquestionably an area that presents tremendous economic potential for rural Kansas. Ultimately, capturing these economic opportunities will result in an improved quality of life for Kansans.”
