USDA Rural Development Acting Under Secretary Gilbert Gonzales commented during the announcement ceremony, "USDA Rural Development is the only federal agency that can build a community from the ground-up. We not only offer affordable solutions for homeownership and rental housing, but the Agency also has programs for community water and sewer infrastructure, town halls, fire stations, fire trucks, day cares, broadband, distance learning and telemedicine, and business and economic development."
