July 11, 2002 - Iola, KS. -- U.S. Representative Jim Ryan addressed a group of agricultural producers gathered at Iola, Kansas today during an informational meeting discussing the Value-Added Agricultural Product Market Development Grant Programs. This Value-Added Program is one of several new provisions created with the recent passage of the 2002 Farm Bill.

"I am very supportive of Kansas Rural Development and the rural development provisions of the 2002 Farm Bill. The Value-Added Agricultural Program especially offers farm producers and our rural communities the opportunity to enhance their economic development", Rep. Ryan said.

Chuck Banks, State Director for USDA Rural Development commented, "Agriculture is one of the most technically-advanced industries in America and these grants will promote more innovation and opportunities for our agricultural producers".

Proposals are requested from eligible independent producers, agricultural producer groups, farmer or rancher cooperatives, and majority-controlled producer-based business ventures interested in a competitively awarded grant.

Gary Smith, Community & Business Programs Director remarked, "Creating commerce and jobs in rural areas are key to the prosperity of our rural communities. The Value-Added Product Market Development Grants Program is one more tool we have to help facilitate rural development".
