USDA Rural Development dedicates Wabaunsee County Water District #2

July 15, 2002 - Topeka, KS. -- Kansas Rural Development State Director Chuck Banks, along with a large crowd of community patrons, celebrated the completion of the Wabaunsee County Rural Water District #2 on Saturday. The dedication was held at the Water District's facility in rural northern Wabaunsee County.

During the ceremonies, State Director Banks praised the project, noting that the District now provides safe and abundant water supplies to over 500 residential and agricultural users. The District also serves several public facilities along I-70, along the KSU Agronomy Farm in Riley County.

Ms. Jeanette Loughary, Chairperson of the water district board, also thanked USDA Rural Development for its assistance in the project, along with the many local supporters. Harold Stones with the office of U.S. Senator Pat Roberts also praised the project, citing it as a positive example of cooperation between the federal government and the private sector in improving the lives of rural Kansans. Ron Dickey, Secretary for the water district board said, " We are thankful for the Reverse Osmosis Plant due to quality issues now and in the future".

The project, consisting of three phases over an eleven year period, includes a Reverse Osmosis treatment facility which removes herbicides and other contaminates which can threaten the users' water supply. Kansas Rural Development provided approximately $4.7 million in loans and grants to assist the District in the establishment of the system. Local users of the water district also contributed $226,300 for the project.
