EMPOWERMENT ZONES/ENTERPRISE COMMUNITIES

 

Purpose:  To help create long-term economic and community development and assist communities in empowering themselves to improve local conditions and become self-sustaining

Program Type: Grant funds from other agencies, technical assistance from OCD; designation as an Empowerment Zone (EZ) or Enterprise Community (EC) bestows primary consideration status for many other federal and state programs

Eligible Applicants:  Rural communities wishing to address their economic and social problems through the implementation of a strategic plan utilizing partnerships between private and public entities

Authorized Purposes:  Financial and technical assistance resources are used to address economic and social problems through the development and implementation of a strategic plan and through the creation of partnerships between the public and private sectors 

When to Apply:  Existing EZs and ECs may seek assistance year round; the opportunity for new designations is announced periodically in the Federal Register
