May 9, 2011 -- Ground has been broken on a new $12 million expansion project for the Harrodsburg Water

Treatment Plant. As a result of Rural Development's investment, Wausau Paper has announced plans for

a $220 million expansion, which will create hundreds of new jobs. Attendees pictured above include, from left,

Oct. 28, 2010 -- USDA Deputy Secretary Kathleen Merrigan was in Lexington, Ky., last week to announce the

recipients for RMAP loans and grants. During her visit, Merrigan spoke with Anna Marletta, owner of Bellini’s

Restaurant, who shared her story of microborrowing from Community Ventures Corporation, which was one

of two Kentucky companies to receive RMAP funding.

Kentucky Baptist Fellowship volunteers

June 10, 2010 -- More than 100 volunteers from 25 churches across Kentucky are helping build

a house in 10 days as part of the fifth annual McCreary County Extreme Build in Whitley City.

Wilson was selected by the Kentucky Baptist Fellowship as the recipient of the fifth annual McCreary County

Extreme Build in Whitley City. Her new home was made possible in part by a RD Section 502 Direct Home Loan.

June 10, 2010 -- Rural Development helped make the dream of home ownership a reality for a McCreary

County woman and her family. Kristi Wilson was selected as the recipient of the fifth annual McCreary County

Extreme Build in Whitley City. Using a crane, Volunteers with the Kentucky Baptist Fellowship place a

pre-fabricated kitchen/bathroom/utility room module onto the foundation. Wilson is purchasing

the home through Rural Development's Section 502 Direct Loan program.

Appalachian Child Development Center

May 21, 2010 -- Appalachian Child Development Center in Whitesburg, Ky., opened as a non-profit center in 2003.

With help from a Rural Development Community Facilities grant, the center recently completed an expansion

that allowed it to increase enrollment and eliminate a waiting list for parents in need of licensed child care.

March 2010: Magoffin County Opens New Health Department

 Magoffin County residents celebrate the opening of a new health department.

March 19 -- Rural Development State Director Tom Fern (center) helps cut the ribbon to mark the opening

of a new health department in Magoffin County. He is joined by Dr. William Hacker, State Commissioner

of Public Health and Bertie Salyer, Magoffin County Public Health Director.

 

Hundreds turned out for the opening of the new Magoffin County Health Department.

 

It was standing room only as hundreds of local residents showed up to tour the facility.

November 2008: State Director presents DLT funds to Pulaski County

Rural Development presents check to Pulaski Board of Education

November 18, 2008--USDA Rural Development State Director presented a $128,449
check to the Pulaski County Board of Education.  The funds were part of Rural
Development's Distance Learning and Telemedicine (DLT) grant program and will be
used to enhance and upgrade the existing high-speed data-networking infrastructure
to provide videoconferencing to qualifying rural schools in the district.  Eight rural
schools will participate in the project and will receive enhanced instruction in Science,
Technology, Engineering, and Math.  Teachers will be able to participate in professional
development, and participating schools will be able to obtain and share content,
expand and enhance support for instructors, and connect students in the remote
sites to students and other experts throughout the country.  Part of this new
technology was demonstrated with a school in New York during the check presentation. 

 

October 2008: Beatyville Dedicates Water Treatment Plant

City of Beattyville dedicates its new water treatment plant

October 28, 2008--The City of Beattyville held a Dedication Ceremony for their new
water treatment plant--called the Charles Beach III Water Treatment Plant. 
The
project included the construction of a new 2.0 million gallon per day (mgd)
conventional water treatment plant, raw water intake structure on the Kentucky River,
and a transmission line from the intake to the new water treatment plant.

 

This project was funded through a $1,100,000 Rural Development loan and
$1,400,000 grant; ARC Grant  $750,000; KIA 2020 Grant $1,000,000; KIA 2005
Grant $950,000; KIA 2006 Grant $2,000,000; KIA Tobacco Settlement $750,000;
EDA Grant $1,558,000, EPA Grant $346,900, and Local/Kentucky DOT $274,545,
for a total project cost of $10,129,445.   Attending the Dedication Ceremony
were Debbie McKinney, State Director for US Senator Jim Bunning; Regina
Crawford, Field Representative for US Senator Jim Bunning; Donna McClure,
Field Representative for US Senator Mitch McConnell; Kenneth Slone, State
Director of USDA Rural Development; Charles Beach III, former Mayor of
Beattyville and namesake for the water treatment plant; Joe Kash, Mayor
for the  City of Beattyville; Robert Stivers, State Senator; and Pat Wooton,
Field Representative for US Congressman Harold "Hal" Rogers.

 

Carter County School District receives Rural Development grant

October 17, 2008--The Carter County School District received $438,904 in Distance Learning
and Telemedicine grant funding from USDA Rural Development.  This funding be used
to install an interactive videoconferencing system to link the hub site to eleven end-user
sites in Carter County.  The system will also provide the school district the ability to 
archive classes, conduct collaborations, provide professional development, and manage
presentations for on-demand viewing as well as enable live streaming to any end-user
in the network. 
This grant will enable the Carter County School District to expand the
curriculum and impact learning for the 5,121 students in the schools of the end-user
sites, as well as increase the educational opportunities for the 27,000 county residents.

McCreary County gets new police cruisers

October 15, 2008--The McCreary County Fiscal Court received a $35,925 community
facilities grant from USDA Rural Development to be used, along with $11,975 from the
Sheriff's Department, to purchase two new police cruisers for protecting the citizens of
McCreary County.

Beattyville receives grant for new fire truck

October 14, 2008--The City of Beattyville received a $70,237 community facilities grant
from USDA Rural Development.  This grant, along with $23,413 contributed by the City,
was used to purchase a new fire truck by the Beattyville-Lee County Fire Department.

purchased with a $23,407 grant from USDA Rural Development and a $7,803 contributed from the City.

Wood Creek Water and Sewer District opens a new treatment plant

October 2, 2008--Wood Creek Water & Sewer District celebrated the opening of
their newly renovated  water treatment plant with an Open House.  The District has
been in existence for over 40 years and is a regional supplier, providing treated water
to many adjacent utilities, and growing from approximately 600 to 4,755 customers. 
The renovation was funded by a USDA Rural Development loan of $7,975,000 and
$1 million grant, in addition to a $500,000 ARC grant, $750,000 KIA grant, $1,199,000
EDA grant, and $3,605,000 KRWA loan, for a total project cost of $15,029,000.
