HOMEOWNERSHIP AND THE POSITIVE RESULTS THAT IT BRINGS

Delmar, MD June 19, 2006 – Michael and Anna Adkins have a new home as the result of a homeownership program through USDA Rural Development.

Federal, State and Local officials gathered at the Adkins’ new home located at "Breckenridge II" in Delmar to recognize National Homeownership Month and the rewards that owning a home can bring. "Providing a home for your children that you can call your own is one of the best feelings in the world," said Gilchrest. "It’s a place where memories are made and family values are shared. I am grateful that USDA Rural Development can help people realize the American Dream."

This is just one of the many events taking place this month in recognition of National Homeownership Month, according to Marlene Elliott, USDA Rural Development State Director. "Affordable housing has become a challenge for many young families on the Eastern Shore," said Elliott. "We are here today to celebrate homeownership with a young family and to share the message that USDA Rural Development is here to help people in rural areas achieve the dream of buying their own home. Many times the amount of a monthly mortgage payment or the need for a significant down payment makes it difficult for people to become homeowners. Rural Development’s homeownership programs do not require a down payment making it more likely that a person or a family might be able to start the homeownership process."

The Adkins searched for nearly a year before finding an affordable home for them and their three children. "We worked with Real Estate Agent, Patty Moore with Martin and Moore Realty," said Anna Adkins. "We had an excellent experience; the process went very fast and Patty put us in touch with First Horizon Home Loans who told us about the USDA Rural Development program. We love where we live; it is a great neighborhood to raise our children."

Last year in Maryland, USDA Rural Development assisted more than 400 families become homeowners. The homeownership program serves people living in rural areas, with a population of 10,000 or less. The agency encourages interested home seekers to contact their local office serving Wicomico, Worcester and Somerset Counties at 410-632-0616, ext. 4 or their State Office serving Maryland and Delaware at 302-857-3580 for more information.
