MacLeish Promoted to Business and Community Program Director

Dover, DE (February 24, 2009) – Denise MacLeish from Dover, DE has been named the Business and Community Program Director for USDA Rural Development that serves Delaware and Maryland.  She succeeds Jim Waters, who served in that position from June 1976 until he retired January 3, following 32 years of federal service.

Rural Development is one of seven mission areas in the United States Department of Agriculture that has been committed to increasing economic opportunity and improving the quality of life in rural America for more than 70 years.  Last year, the agency returned more than $84 million to rural Delaware and rural Maryland to help address problems with aging infrastructure, sustainable agriculture, the creation and retention of jobs and inadequate public services.

From 1985 until her recent appointment, MacLeish has served as the Business and Community Program Loan Specialist coordinating loan and grant funding for water and wastewater improvements with federal, state and local officials.

“Denise has a keen understanding of the issues that are important to small towns and rural communities across rural Delaware and rural Maryland,” said Kathy Beisner, USDA Rural Development Acting State Director.  “She brings years of experience to the position that will serve our agency well.”
