To celebrate National Homeownership Month, Maine State Director Michael Aube (right) presented certificates to new homeowners Linda, Ashley and Brittany Burlock (center) and Aroostook County Action Program representatives Connie Sandstrom and Jim Baillargeon.

To continue the theme of "Planting the Seeds of Homeownership," State Director Aube also presented Ms. Burlock with a flowering shrub for her new home.

On June 19, 2002, An open house was held at the new home of Eric and Samantha Thorpe. A tree planting ceremony was held at the open house and Rural Development presented each family with a lilac tree and plaque to welcome them into their new home.

The Thorpe family is one of 12 that completed a year in the Mutual Self-Help Housing Program.  For a full year, each family works 40 hours a week to complete all of the 12 homes.  This program provides "Sweat Equity" which allows families to have brand new homes they otherwise would not have been able to afford.

On June 5, 2002,  An open house was held to celebrate the completion of a new home by students of the Region 11 Vocational Program.

This home was built by the students for a disabled family using Self-Help Housing funds and a partnership between Rural Development and Community Concepts, Inc.

The celebration of the open house included a Bar-B-Q lunch which was enjoyed by all.

On June 4, 2002, Rural Development Employees Cheryl Beaulieu and Judy Gengler (left) presented new homeowners Kaleb, Kirk and Stephanie Higgins with certificates and gifts.

Thanks to Rural Development, the Higgins family was able to move from a two-story home that did not meet their needs into a single-story home near their family.
