Invests $73,516 to Assist in Development of Gulf of Maine
Aquaculture Business Park
Aquaculture firms in Maine may call the
Gulf of Maine Aquaculture Business Park home in coming years. The Park
is being developed in the village of Corea, on a former U.S. Navy
communications center located in Gouldsboro, and may house up to 15
businesses involved in land-based commercial aquaculture activities,
such as fish farming.

Homeownership Month Event: Levant Woman's Dream of Homeownership Comes
True
For 70-year-old Eleanor Knowlton, it was
"something she'd never dreamed of." A new home, financed through USDA
Rural Development and with assistance from Penquis CAP, MaineHousing,
Housing and Urban Development, and the Department of Energy.
Eleanor had been living in a tarpaper shack. Through assistance by Rural
Development, Penquis CAP and partners, a new replacement home has been
built. The new home is a two-bedroom one-story house.

USDA agencies welcomed
partners and the public to their new offices, located at 1423 Broadway
in Bangor.
Offices located in the
new facility are: Rural Development,
Farm Service Agency, Natural Resources
Conservation Service, Heart of Maine Resource Conservation and
Development, and Penobscot County Soil and Water Conservation
District. Special guests attending the Open House
included Rural Development Chief of
Staff James
F. Fitzgerald, of Washington, DC,
Natural Resources Conservation Service Senior
Advisor to the Chief Michael
A. Sanders, of
Washington, DC, congressional staff, Commissioner of

Ground on a New Addition to Little River Apparel,
in Belfast

Groundbreaking
Ceremony Held for New Addition to Little River Apparel
Rural Development provided a Community
Facilities Guaranteed Loan with Camden
National Bank in the amount of $1,750,000 to construct an addition to
a facility in Belfast, known as Little River
Apparel, which manufactures chemical warfare suits for the Department of
Defense. Leveraged fund were provided by
Eastern Maine Development Corporation in the
form of a $250,000 loan.
Little River Apparel Manufacturing was
started by Group Home Foundation in 1997 to provide more employment
opportunities for people with disabilities in the area.

Officials Break Ground on recent upgrades to the
Orono Wastewater Treatment Facility

Groundbreaking
Ceremony Held for Town of Orono Wastewater Treatment Facility
After nearly 40 years, the Orono
wastewater treatment facility is still in "excellent shape" due to the
maintenance efforts on behalf of the Town. Funding from USDA Rural
Development has also helped ensure the facility remains in good
condition. The agency has invested nearly $12 million in upgrades to the
sewer treatment plant and sewer collection system.

USDA Earth Day
Celebration Draws Area School Children
The Third Annual USDA Earth Day
Celebration was a hit with second grade students from the Washington
Street and Eddington Elementary Schools. The objective of the Earth Day
Celebration is to encourage knowledge and awareness of
environmentally-friendly practices and help young children understand
that they can make a difference in keeping the earth clean.
On hand to assist in
the learning process was Brewer Mayor Mike Celli and staff from Maine's
congressional delegation. The
Maine Discovery Museum assisted children in a
recycling activity making “dancing toys,” the U.S. Fish and Wildlife
Service educated children in an activity
“Atlantic Salmon Migration by Smell,” and children decorated
Earth Day bags for Brewer Hannaford Store.
The USDA Agencies
sponsoring the event were USDA Rural Development, Natural Resources
Conservation Service, and the Farm Service Agency.

FUTURE MSAD 3
Receives Grant Funds
At a public performance of Mount View
High School's Old Time Radio Hour, FUTURE MSAD 3 received a Big Check
from USDA Rural Development in the amount of $30,000.
The funds will be used to purchase
theatrical lighting and sound system equipment for the planned
performing arts center in the new Mount View School in Thorndike. This
important investment will assist the new Mount View High School in
reaching their goal of having a 300-seat, state-of-the-art performing
arts center, and will benefit approximately 1,000 area students, ages
Pre-K-12.
FUTURE MSAD 3 is a non-profit
organization run by board of 16 community volunteers. Their mission is
to raise funds to enhance particular areas in the new Mount View School
complex not covered by state funding.

New Housing
Opportunities on Indian Island
Wenona's Place, an
eight-unit apartment building, opened its doors to the public at an Open
House on February 28. A Ribbon Cutting Ceremony took place to celebrate
the partnerships that made the project possible.
USDA Rural Development provided a Section 515
Rural Rental Housing Loan in the amount of $1
million, as well as seven units of Rental Assistance to help
tenants with their rent. This housing is important
as the need for housing in the area is great.
This project would not
have been possible without the collaboration of partners.

A Broadband
Symposium: Connecting Maine's Future, Draws Large Crowd
Over 160 people
gathered at a Symposium on Broadband sponsored by USDA Rural
Development, Eastern Maine Development Corporation, and the Bangor Daily
News on November 8. The needs of businesses, healthcare organizations,
and towns were discussed, and resources at the Federal, State, and Local
levels presented.
