USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT ANNOUNCES MORE THAN $2 MILLION FOR U.P. COMMUNITIES 

EAST LANSING, Aug. 7, 2007 – USDA Rural Development Director for Michigan Gene DeRossett will host a series of ceremonies commemorating $2,012,616 in grants and loans for communities across the Upper Peninsula. 

The events are open to the general public and everyone is welcome to attend. 

The list below indicates the date, time, location, recipients and award amount of the presentation. 

Date: Aug. 14th                       Time:  10 a.m. EDT
Location: 615 W. Munising Ave., in Munising.
The Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians will host an open house and ribbon-cutting ceremony for their new Tribal Community Center.

Date: Aug. 15th                       Time:  noon EDT
Location: 203/207 S. Westwood Ave, in Kingsford.
Dickinson-Iron Non-Profit Housing Corp. will receive a $432,974 loan for the construction of a new community building/office/laundry area and the rehabilitation of 32 units of multi-family housing.

Date:  Aug. 15th                      Time:  4 p.m. EDT
Location:  Gogebic County Court House in Bessemer
The Gogebic County Office of Emergency Services will receive a grant check for $71,642 to install a NOAA weather radio transmitter to warn the public about severe weather.

Date:  Aug. 16th                      Time:  9 a.m. EDT
Location:  Keweenaw County Courthouse, 5095 4th St. in Eagle River.
Keweenaw County will receive an $8,000 grant to help purchase two all-terrain vehicles for rescue services in remote wilderness areas otherwise unreachable by ambulances.

Date:  Aug. 16th                      Time:  11 a.m. EDT
Location:  Houghton County Controller’s Office, 401 E. Houghton Ave, in Houghton.
Houghton County will receive a $24,000 grant to purchase two all-terrain vehicles for rescue services in remote wilderness areas otherwise unreachable by ambulances.

Date:  Aug 16th                       Time:  12:30 p.m. EDT
Location:  Township Hall, 47240 Green Acres Rd., in Houghton.
The Charter Township of Portage will receive a $700,000 loan to construct a water main, improve the existing water storage tank and add or replace nine fire hydrants.

Date:  Aug 16th                       Time:  3:30 p.m. EDT
Location:  City Hall, 106 Genesee Ave., in Iron River.
The City of Iron River will receive a $500,000 loan to improve drinking water quality, water pressure and fire protection.

Date:  Aug 16th                       Time:  5 p.m. EDT
Location:  New township hall 1371 S. US 2 in Crystal Falls.
The Township of Mastodon will receive a $276,000 loan for the construction of a new township hall that will also host the fire department.
