USDA Rural Development Celebrates SafeCenter Open House

EAST LANSING, Oct. 20, 2011 – U.S. Dept. of Agriculture Rural Development State Director for Michigan James J. Turner today commemorated the open house for SafeCenter’s new Owosso facility.

“Improving the quality of life for rural residents includes providing help for most vulnerable,” said Turner.  “USDA Rural Development is proud to partner with SafeCenter to help make this new facility a reality.”

Formerly known as Relief After Violent Encounter, Inc., SafeCenter provides residential and non-residential services, including counseling to victims of domestic and sexual violence.   USDA Rural Development provided a Community Facility loan for $375,000 to help finance the project.

The funds purchased and rehabilitated existing buildings for SafeCenter to centralize administrative functions, reduce its cost for space and improve program delivery.  The buildings are designed to provide nicer workable accommodations to victims of domestic violence receiving critical services.  SafeCenter will retain its St. Johns facility to serve residents in that area.

USDA, through its Rural Development mission area, administers and manages housing, business and community infrastructure and facility programs through a national network of state and local offices. These programs are designed to improve the economic stability of rural communities, businesses, residents, farmers and ranchers and improve the quality of life in rural America. Rural Development has an existing portfolio of more than $150 billion in loans and loan guarantees.
