LUCE COUNTY RECIEVES $1.5 MILLION FROM USDA

EAST LANSING, Aug. 20, 2008 – U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Director for Michigan Gene DeRossett today presented two ceremonial checks totaling more $1,582,000 to community leaders in Newberry and Germfask Township for water and public safety improvements.

“USDA Rural Development has a great record of working with Luce County,” said DeRossett.  “From clean water to public safety, we are working with communities to get the job done.”

Germfask Township received $1,570,000 ($395,000 loan and $1,175,000 grant) for a second production well, a new 75,000-gallon ground-level accumulation storage tank, a centrifugal pump station, 4,500 feet of 12-inch water main, 4,000 feet of 8-inch water main and appurtenances, pumps, water meters, a standby generator and a river crossing.  The project brings the township into compliance with the Safe Drinking Water Act and will benefit 93 rural customers.

Luce County received a $12,000 grant for a new animal control vehicle.

The events are part of a series of ceremonies commemorating more than $6 million in grants and loans this month for communities across the Upper Peninsula.
