USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT TO PRESENT $17 MILLION TO U.P. COMMUNITIES

 EAST LANSING, May 1, 2008 – U.S. Department of Agriculture Rural Development Director for Michigan Gene DeRossett will host a series of ceremonies in early May to commemorate $17,129,000 in loans and grants for communities across the Upper Peninsula.

The events are open to the general public and everyone is welcome to attend. 

The list below indicates the date, time, location, recipients and award amount of the presentation. 

Date: May 7th                          Time:  11 a.m. EDT
Location:  Bay Mills College Administration Building, 12214 W. Lakeshore Drive in Brimley.
Bay Mills Indian Community will receive a $56,000 ceremonial check for an ambulance and Bay Mills Community College will receive a $223,000 ceremonial check for campus improvements.

Date: May 7th                          Time:  3:30 p.m. EDT
Location: City Hall, 300 N. Maple Ave., in Manistique.
The City of Manistique will receive a $49,000 ceremonial check for an ambulance, fire equipment van and skid unit.

Date:  May 8th                         Time:  11:30 a.m. EDT
Location:  Munising City Hall, 100 W. Munising Ave. in Munising.
The City of Munising will receive a $13,729,000 ceremonial check for water and sewer improvements.

Date:  May 8th                         Time:  2:30 p.m. EDT
Location:  Emergency Service Building, 47 Johnson Lake Rd., in Gwinn.
Forsyth Township will receive a $15,000 ceremonial check for a new police patrol car.

Date:  May 9th                         Time:  11:00 a.m. EDT
Location:  Schoolcraft Township Hall, 226 Front St., in Lake Linden.
The Torch Lake Area Sewer Authority will receive a $2,756,000 ceremonial check for upgrades to the sewer system.

Date:  May 9th                         Time:  3:00 p.m. EDT
Location:  City of Houghton Fire Hall, corner of Gundlach and Sharon, in Houghton.
USDA Rural Development will honor First Responders and present ceremonial checks to the following:

  • City of Houghton – two patrol vehicles, $34,000
  • Houghton County – two patrol vehicles, $30,000
  • Keweenaw County – patrol vehicle, $19,000
  • City of Hancock – two patrol vehicles, $33,000
  • Township of Grant – fire truck, $185,000
