National USDA Official Recognizes Grove City Community Homes

Historic $834,000 USDA Rural Development loan will rehab facility

ST. PAUL , Minn. , Sept. 29 – Russell Davis, Rural Housing Administrator for Rural Development in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), visited Grove City Community Homes today. Davis joined local, state and federal officials in recognizing the housing complex for recently being awarded an $834,000 low-interest loan from USDA Rural Development for a rehabilitation project.

The 26-unit family housing complex was awarded the nation’s first Section 515 multi-family housing loan in 1964, when USDA Rural Development was known as the Farmer’s Home Administration. The initial $182,000 loan was used to build the facility.

“This is a historically significant project for USDA Rural Development and housing in rural America ,” Davis said. “This project got the ball rolling and began USDA Rural Development’s strong history of assisting rural communities with affordable housing. Providing and preserving affordable housing in rural areas is a high priority of President Bush’s agenda for rural America .”

The new $834,000 loan will be used for extensive interior and exterior rehabilitation of the complex, including roof repairs, parking lot paving, new carpeting and new kitchens.

“ Grove City had the leadership and drive to pursue this project back in 1964,” said Steve Wenzel, Minnesota State Director of USDA Rural Development. “It is great to see that the city leadership is still strong and was able to secure this loan to rehab this very important facility.”

Wenzel also cited the work of Rep. Dean Urdahl and U.S. Sen. Norm Coleman for their efforts in supporting the Grove City Community Homes project.

USDA Rural Development has funding available for housing, clean water, hospitals, high-speed Internet, economic development, job creation and other essential infrastructure. Since 2001, the agency has invested over $2.1 billion throughout Minnesota .
