USDA Rural Development Celebrates Grant to Improve Meadowlands Community Center MEADOWLANDS, Minn. Dec. 8 – Steve Wenzel, Minnesota State Director of Rural Development in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), visited Meadowlands today to celebrate improvements made to the city’s community center. USDA Rural Development awarded Meadowlands a $14,500 grant in April to repair the community center’s roof and make the building fully handicap accessible. The community also raised about $7,800 for the project. “I like to say that USDA Rural Development is the venture capitalist of rural Minnesota,” Wenzel said. “We help finance a number of projects that add to the unique quality of life found in rural Minnesota. However, the success of any rural community ultimately comes down to its citizens taking the initiative to maintain or improve that quality of life. The people of Meadowlands are obviously committed to the future of their community.” Since 2001 USDA Rural Development has invested over $2.5 billion throughout Minnesota – more than twice the national average. The agency has funding available for housing, clean water, high speed Internet, hospitals, emergency response, renewable energy and other essential infrastructure. “President Bush has crafted a policy that focuses on fostering economic development and increased opportunity in rural America,” Wenzel said. “USDA Rural Development is here to carry out President Bush’s vision of a strong rural America.” For more information on USDA Rural Development, visit www.rurdev.usda.gov/mn, or call the office in Duluth at (218) 720-5330.
