U.S. Congressman Gil Gutknecht Presents USDA Rural Development Check to Compart Family Farms $150,000 grant will help 3rd generation hog farmers market locally produced premium pork products NICOLLET, Minn. Dec. 21 – U.S. Congressman Gil Gutknecht joined officials from USDA Rural Development today in awarding Compart Family Farms of Nicollet, Minn. a $150,000 grant. The grant comes from USDA Rural Development’s value-added producer grant program (VAPG). The VAPG program is designed to help agricultural commodity producers refine their products to increase value for the customer. Compart Family Farms will use its grant to market its unique brand of Compart-Duroc premium pork products. Compart-Duroc pork contains a higher percentage of intramuscular fat and a higher pH, resulting in a more tender, juicy, flavorful and natural pork product without injecting or pumping. “Rural America relies on local businesses like Compart Family Farms,” Gutknecht said. “The employment and revenue they bring to this area is important. The commitment they bring to the local community is irreplaceable. This USDA grant will help them continue to produce great pork products right here in Nicollet. Since 2001, USDA Rural Development has invested about $2.5 billion throughout rural Minnesota, more than twice the national average. The agency has funding available for housing, clean water, high-speed Internet, hospitals, emergency response, renewable energy, and other essential community infrastructure. “We carry out President Bush’s vision of a strong rural America,” said Steve Wenzel, State Director of USDA Rural Development in Minnesota. “Grants like this help create jobs and promote economic development in rural areas. I want to thank Compart Family Farms for the work they do in helping to sustain a strong rural economy. I also want to thank Congressman Gutknecht for his work in ensuring projects like this receive the funding they deserve.” More information on Compart Duroc premium pork products can be found at www.compartduroc.com.
