Rural Development Recognizes Upper
Sioux Community
Federal agency has awarded $256,270 in grants for projects on Upper Sioux
reservation
GRANITE FALLS,
Minn.
Oct. 5 – Steve Wenzel, Minnesota State Director of Rural Development in the
U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) visited the Upper Sioux Community today.
Wenzel recognized the community for being awarded $256,270 in USDA Rural
Development grants over the past year.
“The grants we awarded the Upper Sioux Community will
promote economic development in the area and meet infrastructure needs,”
Wenzel said. “President Bush has made a commitment to provide rural
communities with the tools and resources needed to thrive. At USDA Rural
Development we work with rural communities to ensure the President’s
objectives are met.”
A breakdown of the grants is as follows:
$172,500 –
To assist in bringing broadband Internet access to the reservation.
$50,000 –
To purchase a public utilities vehicle and equipment to help the
reservation start its own public works department.
$33,770 –
To purchase a police car and equipment to help the reservation start
its own public works department.
USDA Rural Development has funding available for housing,
clean water, hospitals, high-speed Internet, economic development, job creation
and other essential infrastructure. Since 2001, the agency has invested over
$2.5 billion throughout
Minnesota
