USDA Rural Development Grant Helps White Earth Tribal and Community College Establish Interactive Classroom

MAHNOMEN, Minn., April 5 – Work is nearly complete on an interactive classroom at the White Earth Tribal and Community College (WETCC). Steve Wenzel, State Director of Rural Development in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), visited WETCC today to tour the project. USDA Rural Development awarded WETCC a $14,300 grant in 2004 to help fund the project.

“Projects like this create a flatter world and give rural communities the opportunity to offer first-rate colleges and educational opportunities,” Wenzel said. “President Bush has emphasized recently the importance of using technology to capture the innovative spirit of the American people. It is great to see the WETCC doing just that.”

The total project is estimated to cost $26,000. Once the project is complete, WETCC will have a dedicated lab for distance education. A total of 11 computers will be purchased.  In addition, the College will be purchasing projection equipment to allow for interactive distance learning.

The White Earth Tribal & Community College currently offers distance learning courses in conjunction with the University of Minnesota Duluth’s College of Education and Human Services Professions.  The equipment purchased with the grant funds will allow the White Earth Tribal & Community College to expand their existing distance learning programming.

USDA Rural Development aims to spur economic development and improve the quality of life in rural areas. The agency invests in Minnesota’s rural communities by providing funding for clean water, quality health care, renewable energy, high-speed Internet, emergency response, housing, and other infrastructure projects.
