Hatfield to Build New Wastewater Treatment System Project receives $335,000 from USDA Rural Development HATFIELD, Minn., April 24 – Curtis Anderson, Deputy Administrator of the Rural Utilities programs for USDA Rural Development and Steve Wenzel, USDA Rural Development Minnesota State Director, visited the city of Hatfield today for a special Earth Day event. The pair announced that Hatfield will receive a $335,000 loan/grant package from USDA Rural Development to build a new wastewater treatment system. The funding comes in the form of a $40,000 loan and a $295,000 grant. The Water Infrastructure Fund, a state-managed water funding program, contributed a matching grant. “Rural Development is committed to bringing cleaner and safer water to rural areas,” Anderson said. “I congratulate the city of Hatfield for securing the monies needed to make the necessary wastewater system improvements that will provide greater water and environmental protection.” U.S. Congressman Gil Gutknecht’s office also attended the event. Hatfield’s current system is old and does not meet pollution control requirements. The new system will replace the current gravity collection system and build a mound treatment system south of the city. Area water quality will improve and pollution concerns will be addressed. Rural Development is recognizing four wastewater treatment projects in Minnesota for Earth Day. A total of $3,323,000 was announced for projects in Bigelow, Huntley, Hatfield and Kent. “It takes a considerable amount of work and foresight for a rural community to address its water and environmental issues,” Wenzel said. “President Bush has equipped Rural Development with the resources to help the communities that want to tackle these issues. I commend Hatfield for addressing these issues and doing their part in improving the environment.” Since 2001, USDA Rural Development has invested about $2.5 billion throughout Minnesota. The agency's mission is to deliver programs in a way that will support increasing economic opportunity and improve the quality of life of rural residents. Rural Development provides investment and technical assistance to finance and foster growth in homeownership, business development, and critical community and technology infrastructure.
