Gutknecht, USDA Recognize Hokah Funding

City awarded $995,000 loan and $459,000 grant for wastewater system

HOKAH, Minn., Aug. 22 – Steve Wenzel, State Director of Rural Development in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), joined U.S. Congressman Gil Gutknecht in Hokah on Tuesday to recognize the city for recently being awarded a Rural Development loan/grant package.

Hokah received a $995,000 low-interest loan and a $459,000 grant to build a new wastewater treatment facility. The new oxidation ditch treatment facility will be built at the site of its current wastewater treatment facility.

“Modern wastewater systems and clean water are essential for economic development,” Gutknecht said. “I commend the city of Hokah for taking steps to address their wastewater and water issues and Rural Development for its financial assistance.”

The city also received a $600,000 Small Cities Development grant for the project. The new system will utilize portions of the old wastewater facility.

“President Bush’s rural policy focuses on increasing the quality of life and economic opportunity in rural areas,” Wenzel said. “This new wastewater system will attract new businesses to Hokah and improve the area’s quality of life.

“I also want to commend Congressman Gutknecht for his work on this project.”

USDA Rural Development has invested about $3 billion throughout rural Minnesota since 2001, more than twice the national average. The agency has funding available for housing, renewable energy, high-speed Internet, hospitals, and other infrastructure.

State Director Wenzel signs the check. Construction on the new wastewater system will begin soon.
