USDA Rural Development Recognizes the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership Slayton-based Community development organization awarded over $26,000 for Housing Preservation Grant SLAYTON, Minn., Oct. 17 – Rep. Gil Gutknecht joined officials from Rural Development in the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Tuesday, Oct. 17, to recognize the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership (SWMHP) in Slayton, Minn. for recently being awarded a $26,037 grant from USDA Rural Development. The grant comes from Rural Development’s Housing Preservation Grant program. Through this program, USDA Rural Development makes grants to nonprofit organizations, local governments and Native American tribes to renovate existing low-income multi-family rental units. Funds may also be used by recipients to help individuals make repairs to private homes. SWMHP will use the grant to renovate and repair eight low-income single-family housing units in Slayton and Jeffers, Minn. "As the economy of Southern Minnesota continues to grow, demand for housing will increase,” Gutknecht said. “This grant helps meet that need. I want to thank the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership for all they do for our communities here in Southern Minnesota. I also want to thank State Director Steve Wenzel and his great team for their tireless work on behalf of rural Minnesota." The Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership was formed in May of 1992, out of a vision held by four organizations that recognized a need to address the unmet community development needs in southwestern Minnesota. The Partnership serves its original 14 county service area and may address community development needs in other counties on a case by case basis. It has developed, rehabilitated, or financed 4,100 units to date, bringing an investment of over $160,000,000 to the region. “I want to extend a big thank you to the Southwest Minnesota Housing Partnership for all it does for housing in Southwestern Minnesota,” said Peter Morgan, Chief of Staff for Rural Development’s Housing and Community Facilities programs. Morgan visited from Washington, D.C. for the event. “I love getting out to these rural communities and visiting with our valued partners.” Since 2001, Rural Development has invested about $3 billion throughout Minnesota. The agency has funding available for housing, clean water, essential community facilities, job creation, and other infrastructure projects.
