MORAVIA PROJECTS RECEIVE FUNDING FROM USDA RURAL DEVELOPMENT

Congressman Boehlert and USDA State Director Brennan Present Ceremonial "Big Checks" to Village and Joint Fire District

Moravia, N.Y., August 12, 2003 --The Village of Moravia and the Moravia Joint Fire Department ( Cayuga County ) were each presented ceremonial "big checks" today by U.S. Representative Sherwood Boehlert and U.S. Department of Agriculture State Director Patrick H. Brennan.  The checks totaling $767,000 represent USDA Rural Development's funding for a new police and justice center and fire truck.

"I'm pleased to announce this much needed funding for the Moravia Joint Fire District and the Village of Moravia, and commend the efforts of Mayor Don Meyers and Fire Chief Kevin Jensen in applying for these grants and loans," said Rep. Sherwood Boehlert (R-New Hartford).  "Obtaining USDA federal funds is a very competitive process.  Without federal assistance, it's unlikely these projects could move forward.  Rest assured, I will continue to support funding for the USDA's Rural Development Program and other federal programs that bring critical federal dollars to local New York communities."

"President Bush has made it a priority to provide our communities' 'first-responders' with adequate resources," said Patrick H. Brennan, State Director for USDA Rural Development in New York .  "The new Police and Justice Center and new Aerial Truck are essential to the well-being and safety of residents in the Village of Moravia and the Moravia Joint Fire District.  USDA Rural Development is proud to provide this Community Facilities Program funding."

The Village will receive from USDA Rural Development a $317,000 low-interest loan and $30,000 grant for the new Police and Justice Center .  Currently, the Village Police and Village Justice occupy space in the Village office, while the State Police are housed in a vacant bay in the fire department.  The new building will consolidate the Village Police, the State Police, and the Village Justice under one roof.  Additional funding includes $50,000 from New York State as well as funds from the Village.

USDA Rural Development will provide the Moravia Joint Fire District with a $390,000 low-interest loan and a $30,000 grant for an Aerial Truck (Pumper/ladder truck).  The vehicle currently in use is in poor condition and a new truck is needed to ensure adequate fire protection.

USDA Rural Development's Community Facilities program provides affordable financing for essential services such as fire departments, childcare facilities, town halls, health care and educational facilities, libraries, and museums.  For more information on Community Facilities programs, please contact Katherine McCoy, Community Development Manager for USDA Rural Development at (315) 677-3552, Ext. 4; or visit the USDA Rural Development web site at www.rurdev.usda.gov/ny.  USDA Rural Development is an Equal Opportunity Lender, Provider, and Employer.  Complaints of discrimination should be sent to: USDA, Director, Office of Civil Rights, Washington , D.C.   20250-9410.
