DeSoto County Champion Community
During the past year the Economic Development Council has undergone a transition in how it assists DeSoto County in achieving economic growth and development. It now functions as an advisory council to the County and the Economic Development Director. This has brought about a new momementum and focus for economic development in DeSoto County. The Council now provides input from the community on a regular basis through scheduled meetings with the Economic Development Director and is actively participating in the development of an industrial park in the County. The County has applied for designation as an Enterprise Zone and is awaiting notification regarding the designation. The County has secured a CDBG grant for the infrastructure improvements associated with the construction of a new Super WalMart. Also, construction has commenced on the Turner Agri-Civic Center; a community facility that will be the center of cultural, entertainment, agriculture related and economic development activities in DeSoto County. Several business entities are actively seeking to locate their operations in DeSoto County and staff along with the EDC are assisting in site locations and funding possibilities to facilitate these businesses locating in the area and enhancing economic development and job growth in the area. The County is also working to secure funding for county-wide water/waste water pipelines that will provide potable water to residents, upgrade water and waste water at state facilities, provide fire protection, reduce the use of package treatment plants, reduce the use of septic systems in a watershed protection area, and facilitate economic development. The County is also working with local USDA representatives to more effectively utilize housing programs to enhance the quality of life for the citizens of the County.
