2003 Annual Report Executive Summary

Empower Lewiston Enterprise Community

2003 was a year of dramatic changes for Empower Lewiston (EL). We experienced a change in staff, change of location, change in leadership, and, most importantly, a change in focus. Although dealing with all of these changes was challenging, it created an opportunity for Empower Lewiston to become re-energized and experience tremendous growth.

The EL office is now located in the heart of the Enterprise Community in the new B Street Community Center, which is shared with several other organizations who assist our residents. For the first time, we have a strong presence and visibility for the people we serve. We have experienced more resident connections because of our new location.

EL Staff now includes a Neighborhood Coordinator and Seeds of Change outreach worker. Both are residents of the Enterprise Community and trusted by other residents. They are involved in various programs and projects within the community and have become valuable resources to both Empower Lewiston's board of directors and residents of the Enterprise Community.

In October, the board elected a new President, Michelle Lefebvre, who previously served on the board as Treasurer since 1999. She is helping the board focus on direction for the future and becoming sustainable after our USDA designation ends in 2008.

The board of directors has decided to focus on youth projects and programs as much as possible in its mission to alleviate poverty in Census Tracts 201 and 204. Excitement and momentum have returned to Empower Lewiston due to all the positive changes. Past partnerships have been renewed; current partnerships are being strengthened, and future partnerships are being explored. It has truly been an exciting and successful year!
