2006 Annual Report Executive Summary
Allendale County ALIVE Enterprise Community
Allendale County ALIVE had a successful year in term of the amount of grant fund awarded in 2006. The 1,477,000 in grant funding doubled the grant funding received in 2004 and 2005. This accomplishment is significant because of the internal and external challenges faced by ALIVE in 2006.
ALIVE was awarded a second round of Youthbuild funding in the amount of $400,000 from the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development. The grant will enable the Youthbuild program to provide academic and construction education, support services and job skills to high school dropouts, as well as increase the supply of affordable housing.
ALIVE had an active year in housing rehab and homeownership. Allendale County ALIVE used funds separately and together from the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority Housing Trust Funds, USDA Rural Development Housing Preservation and 504 funds, and Federal Home Loan Bank of Atlanta AHP funds. Funds from the South Carolina State Housing Finance and Development Authority Homeownership Program was provided to assist eligible first time homeowners in Allendale, Bamberg, Barnwell, Hampton, and Colleton Counties with Down Payment Assistance.
Four citizens were elected to the Board of Directors during the Fall Forum held on November 9, 2006. Lee Howard Kearse, Sharon Green, and Samuel Capers were elected for the first time. Willie Elmore was re-elected for a second term.
Allendale County ALIVE was awarded $100,000 by the South Carolina Department of Commerce and the South Carolina Association of Community Development Corporations to partner with local investors to open a national grocery chain in Allendale South Carolina. All indications are that the store will create permanent jobs and provide competitive food prices for low to moderate income families in Allendale County. ALIVE’s profits from the venture will help with sustainability for Allendale County ALIVE.
