2006 Annual Report Executive Summary

Upper Kanawha Valley Enterprise Community

The UKVEC has recently completed its seventh year of operation and its fifth year of occupancy in the UKVEC Business Center in Chelyan, West Virginia. Two very significant changes affecting the sustainability of the organization and development of the community have occurred: 1) our Community Representative will serve as Project Manager for the Upper Kanawha Valley Economic Development Corporation administering a $670,000 plus grant, and; 2) the Governor’s Office of Economic Opportunity has asked us above all other entities in the state to do the administrative services for a new corporation named the Capital Resource Agency which will replace the bankrupt Multi-Cap, Inc.

The UKVEC Business Center is now filled to capacity and has a waiting list for businesses or organizations wishing to gain entry. This is helping to spur economic development in the area. The UKVEC has now refurbished and distributed more than three-hundred computers to low income local students through local schools. We have distributed more than eighteen computers to local non-profit and community groups. The Kanawha County Assessor and Prosecutor are added as partners of donated computers along with the Kanawha County Commission, U.S. EPA, American Electric Power, Dell National Cristina Foundation and the West Virginia Management Board. Through grants from the Kanawha County commission, the West Virginia Legislative Digest and the Governors Community Partnership Programs the UKVEC was instrumental in bringing over $600,000 to local schools, fire departments and other area non-profit organizations in 2006. We have enhanced the video conferencing capability with the help of the USDA and now provide a conference room for area law firms, business and non-profit organizations and those entities regularly avail themselves of such services.

Plans for the future include keeping our congressional leaders abreast of EZEC activities and accomplishments, developing strategies to address housing and other infrastructure improvement including potable water, wastewater collection, demolition, road improvements, recreation, and brownfields redevelopment.
