2008 Annual Report Executive Summary

City of Bowling Green Enterprise Community

The Bowling Green EC remains focused on creating a better environment for the residents of the EC district. The Youth Development program assisted 38 individuals during the calendar year with a variety of activities, including sports registration fees, enrichment programs, school field trips and many more for a total award of almost $10,000. The Child Care program funded two applications for temporary assistance with childcare in the amount of $2516.00. The set-aside for school assistance was increased for the 2008-2009 school year. This money is given to all the schools serving the students of the EC and is used for emergency needs of the school children. The program is administered through the Family Resource and Youth Service Centers at the schools. Five post secondary scholarships were awarded for the 2008-2009 school year in the amount of $1,000 for each student. Three of the recipients are attending Western Kentucky University and two are attending the Bowling Green Technical College.

The BGEC continues to partner with many local service provider agencies. The Service Provider Council is comprised of 20 agencies and gives the EC a broad reach throughout the community. A new partnership was established with the non-profit Restoration Unlimited, Inc, to distribute Angel Food Ministries Vouchers. The vouchers can be redeemed for food baskets. The vouchers are being distributed through the two elementary schools in the EC and through the Senior Program at Community Action. The assistance is one time and introduces the family to an economical way to provide food for their families on a monthly basis. The EC has partnered with Community Action of Southern Kentucky to provide utility assistance to families that earn too much to qualify for LIHEAP, but are still unable to pay their utility bills. The program will serve households that fall between 130 -150% of poverty level. The upper limit for LIHEAP is 130% of poverty level. The maximum amount per household is $250.
