2008 Annual Report Executive Summary
City of Deming Enterprise Community
With the end of 2008 would have come the end of the City of Deming’s Enterprise Community designation, but we were granted an extension to finish our projects.
2008 was filled with activities and progress. The direction of our community and its commitment remain constant.
The Southwest Regional Transit District (SWRTD) is in its second year of services and operating funds totaling over $1 million dollars were secured in 2008 for this project. Over 65,000 rides were provided on a regional level with 11,700 rides given to Luna County residents alone. SWRTD received $850,000 from NM DOT with matches from Deming and Luna County at $60,000 each, Lordsburg and Hidalgo County at $20,000 each, and Silver City and Grant County at $30,000 each, for total operating costs of over $1,000,000 in 2008. The SWRTD is a result of three counties, and three cities working together to provide much needed transportation services to our rural areas.
The Luna County Housing Corporation went from 1.5 employees last year to 4 employees this year. Their operating and program budget went from roughly $50,000 last year to $800,000 in 2008. MVA was able to provide $46,000 to their operating budget this year. Luna County Housing Corporation is the general partner in a 60-unit senior apartment complex which always has a waiting list.
MVA was able to provide $12,500 for Cancer Support of Deming and Luna County this year. They added another van this year and now have two vehicles taking patients two and from Cancer Treatment centers.
Deming Public Schools opened another new school this year with the opening of Ruben Torres Elementary School in August, and Columbus Elementary Year Round School will open next summer. The old Columbus Elementary School has been donated to the Village of Columbus to house agencies providing community services.
This year’s graduating class through Western New Mexico University had 66 graduates up 19 from the previous year.
Construction projects completed during 2008 include:
Overall, it was a very productive year and one of growth and maturity. The Mimbres Valley Authority City of Deming Enterprise Community (MVA) is excited about our accomplishments in 2008 and look forward to a successful 2009 in the EZ/EC program. We continued to focus on education & training, economic development and opportunity, community development, health and recreation, and housing; the five basic categories of our Strategic Plan. Our Enterprise Community Designation has provided an avenue for worthwhile activities, successful accomplishments, and positive differences.
