Background

Overview

Located in the Central Valley of California, this community is largely agricultural with high concentrations of migrant and farm laborers.  Off-season unemployment is often above 40%. The strategic plan focuses on strategies to address the social and economic needs of area residents through grassroots revitalization efforts.   The two-year work plan reflects a continuing emphasis on leveraging, and proposes several projects for business development, job creation, infrastructure improvements, and health care.  Social programs include health care and job training for seasonal farm workers and their children.

The Tule Indian River Tribe was included as a full partner in developing the strategic plan, even though the tribal lands are only included as developable sites.

 

Community Involvement

 

During the planning process strategic planning workshop were advertised and attended by a broad cross-section of the community.  Each workshop was held in both English and Spanish.
