Earth Day 2003: Surry County, North Carolina

Loan:    $2,548,000
Grant:   $4,599,000
Total:    $7,147,000

Outline of Need:

The Flat Rock and Bannertown Communities of Surry County have experienced severe problems with failed septic tanks and contaminated wells. Because of the close proximity of the houses, which are on small lots, and the high concentration of development in a small geographic area, this problem has continued to develop. Many lots have no land available to allow for repair of septic systems once they fail, resulting in contamination of soil and wells for the house on the lot, as well as contamination of neighboring homes.

How Rural Development Helped:

USDA Rural Development is making a Water and Environmental Programs (WEP) loan of $2,548,000 and a grant of $4,599,000 to the Flat Rock/Bannertown Water and Sewer District. The funds will be used to construct approximately 131,500 linear feet of water distribution and 45,700 linear feet of sewer line from the City of Mt. Airy into the Flat Rock and Bannertown communities, serving the 627 residential water users and 117 sewer users.

The Results:

This project will provide clean water and sanitary sewer service to the residences and to the Flat Rock Elementary School.
