Earth Day 2003: Borough of West Cape May, New Jersey

Loan:   $576,000
Grant:   $1,300,000

Other:*   $400,000

* Outside Funding Source

Total:   $2,276,000

Outline of Need:

The Borough of West Cape May has aging water and sewer systems posing a threat to the health and safety of its residents. Costly repairs to the systems are also placing a financial burden on the Borough. Groundwater infiltration of the sewer lines is also causing a loss of recharge to the aquifer.

How Rural Development Helped:

Rural Development is providing a $1,300,000 grant and $576,000 loan for the repair/replacement of the water/sewer systems. $400,000 grant is also being received by the Borough from the Department of Community Affairs.

The Results:

Aging systems will be improved removing health and safety concerns and at the same time help to preserve the natural resources.
