Earth Day 2004: Churchill County, Nevada
Water Loan and Grant

Grant:    $1,183,489
Loan:     $1,288,618

Total:    $2,472,107

Outline of Need:

Churchill County Commissioners contacted USDA Rural Development for assistance with a water loan and grant for a community-wide water system. The Churchill County community-wide water system will provide water lines to several areas of Churchill County that currently do not have community wells and water systems that meet State and Federal standards. Churchill County wells contain naturally-occurring arsenic at varying amounts above the Federal standards.

How Rural Development Helped:

Mike Holm, Community Programs Director, worked with the Churchill County Commissioners to process a USDA Rural Development Water Loan and Grant for a community-wide water system that will consolidate several water systems in the immediate area of Pine Grove. These include Virginia Mobile Home Park, Weststar Mobile Home Park, Jet Way Water System, Oasis Mobile Home Park, The County Club Estates Water System and the Wallace Subdivision.

The Results:

Churchill County was recognized as Nevada's Earth Day 2004 project. Senator John Ensign and Mike Holm presented a ceremonial check in the amount of $2,472,107 for the Churchill County community-wide water system at an event in Fallon, Nevada, April 15, 2004.

When completed, the community-wide water system will meet the State and Federal standards and will provide safe and sanitary drinking water to 600 rural residents in Churchill County.
