EASTERN COOS COUNTY RECEIVES FUNDS
TO BUILD NEW PRIMARY MEDICAL CARE FACILITY
USDA's Community Facilities Program to Benefit Rural Residents
Washington, DC, March 9 -- The US Department of Agriculture's Rural Development mission area will loan $560,000 to Coos County Family Health Services, Inc. to help provide rural residents with access to primary medical care, USDA Under Secretary for Rural Development Jill Long Thompson announced today. USDA Rural Development administers a number of programs designed to strengthen rural economies and expand infrastructure in rural areas.
"Every individual, regardless of where they live, deserves access to primary medical care," Long Thompson said. "As we approach a new millennium, USDA and the Clinton-Gore Administration are committed to providing all individuals, rural and urban alike, with access to quality health care. I am pleased that USDA can contribute in this manner."
Coos County Family Health Services, Inc. will use the $560,000 loan to renovate and expand an existing facility located in Berlin. The refurbished and expanded facility will provide health and related social services to the medically under served population of Eastern Coos County. The new facility will provide comprehensive primary medical care and related social services, including family practice, pre-natal, pediatric, in-patient, and nursing home care as well as WIC nutrition services and domestic violence/sexual assault services.
"This loan will help provide much needed access to quality medical services for the residents of Eastern Coos County," New Hampshire Rural Development State Director Roberta Harold said. "USDA's Community Facilities program makes it possible for rural communities to provide basic services to its residents. This program represents an example of good government."
Through its Community Facilities Program, Rural Development's Rural Housing Service is striving to ensure that facilities - such as health care clinics, police and fire stations, schools and child care centers - are readily available to all rural Americans. The commitment of USDA to this effort is at the core of its mission and its promise to help build stronger, more vibrant rural communities across the nation.
