CEREMONY TO LAUNCH CALIFORNIA RURAL DEVELOPMENT COUNCIL

WHO:
Richard Rominger, USDA Deputy Secretary
Art Campbell, USDA Rural Development Deputy Secretary
Celeste Cantu, California State Director, USDA Rural Development
Lon Hatimaya, Secretary, California Trade and Commerce Agency
And other state and national rural development leaders

WHAT:
Will sign a memorandum of understanding creating the California Rural Development Council, a public-private partnership that seeks to focus attention and resources on ways to improve life for the state's 2 million rural residents.

WHERE:
State Capitol, Governor's Council Room, Sacramento, California

WHEN:
May 18, 2000, 8:30 a.m.

WHY:
Because this council is needed to help rural people in California find solutions to a broad array of challenges, ranging from the need for more affordable housing to ways to improve rural schools and health care and overcome the digital divide, among many others.
