USDA APPOINTS CHARLES CLEMONS TO HEAD RURAL DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS IN FLORIDA

     WASHINGTON, June 29, 2001--The U.S. Department of Agriculture today appointed Charles W. Clemons, Sr., as the Florida State Director for USDA Rural Development.

     Clemons, from Alachua, Fla., has been a licensed investment and insurance advisor since 1981. In 1996, Clemons was elected to the Alachua County Board of County Commissioners, and served as the Board's Chair in 1999.

     Clemons has been very active in his community. He serves on the Alachua County Red Cross Board of Directors. He is the past Chair of the Metropolitan Transportation Planning Organization and a past member of the North Central Florida Regional Planning Council. He also is the past President of the University City Kiwanis Club and a Hixson award recipient. He currently is a member of the Florida Blue Key and is the past President of the W.W. Irby Elementary School PTA.

     Clemons received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1979 from the College of Journalism and Communications at the University of Florida in Gainesville.

     USDA Rural Development serves as the lead federal entity for rural development needs, and administers program assistance through three agencies: Rural Housing Service, Rural Business - Cooperative Service, and Rural Utilities Service.
