USDA APPOINTS DANIEL BROWN TO HEAD RURAL DEVELOPMENT EFFORTS IN IOWA

     WASHINGTON, May 14, 2001--The U.S. Department of Agriculture today appointed Daniel W. Brown, Ph.D., as the Iowa State Director for USDA Rural Development.

     Brown, from Iowa Falls, Iowa, is the Mayor of Iowa Falls and a Professor of Agriculture Sciences and Division Head for Agriculture and Building Trades at Ellsworth Community College in Iowa Falls, where he has been employed since 1973. Brown teaches courses in agriculture marketing, agriculture credit and finance, and computers in agriculture. He has provided international presentations in Russia, Mexico, and Spain on various American agriculture topics to teachers, farmers, business and industrial plant managers, college faculty and administration, and governmental officials.

     Brown served as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army and has received the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, and five Purple Hearts. He is a life member of the American Legion and the Disabled American Veterans. In addition to serving as the Mayor of Iowa Falls, he is a member of the Iowa Falls Area Economic Development Corporation, and a Board of Director for the Iowa Sister States.

     USDA Rural Development serves as the lead federal entity for rural development needs, and administers program assistance through three agencies: Rural Housing Service, Rural Business-Cooperative Service, and Rural Utilities Service.
