USDA MARKS EARTH DAY BY ANNOUNCING $108 MILLION IN RURAL WATER AND WASTEWATER PROJECTS
Rural Development Sponsoring Earth Day Activities in 34 States

     WASHINGTON, April 22, 2002--The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced $108 million in rural water and wastewater projects to build and modernize water and wastewater disposal systems.

     "These funds will help communities across the country improve water quality," said Agriculture Secretary Ann M. Veneman. "In observance of Earth Day, we urge all Americans to do their part to conserve and enhance natural resources."

     USDA Rural Development, through its Rural Utilities Service (RUS), is doing its part by working with rural communities across America to build and modernize water and wastewater disposal systems.

     "Today we are announcing the funding of 46 projects to build and improve rural water and sewage systems, totaling nearly $108 million," said Deputy Undersecretary Mike Neruda who was in Louisiana to announce the funding for three water projects. "These projects will benefit rural communities through cleaner water, recreation and wildlife resources."
