Outline of Need:
An elderly disabled woman, living in an unsafe environment in extreme rural Alaska, endured months of cold and drafty conditions in the unfinished interior of her home. To eliminate the unsafe conditions, insulation and weatherproofing of the home were needed.
How Rural Development Helped:
USDA Rural Development teamed up with Interior Weatherization, a non-profit organization, to fund the installation of sheet rock and egress windows to the 1920's cabin and the self-built 560 square foot addition. The USDA portion of funding was provided through the Section 504 home improvement grant program.
The Results:
The improvements have provided the elderly homeowner with greater protection against the most severe of winter months in Alaska. In the words of the homeowner: "My home has always been drafty and cold. The things you did make it weather tight and will change every day of the rest of my life. As a disabled senior I say thank you for caring enough to do an excellent job."
