Outline of Need:
Gardenside Elementary School is part of the Lakeside Union Elementary School District, which is situated in an economically depressed area of Kings County in California. The existing playground equipment for primary children at Gardenside is close to occupied classrooms and the equipment is old and has deteriorated to the point of being a safety issue for the school.
How Rural Development Helped:
USDA Rural Development provided a Community Facilities Economic Impact Imitative Grant learn more about this program) to the Union Elementary School District in the amount of $18,000 to provide new playground equipment.
The Results:
Today, the children at the Gardenside Elementary School are spending recess playing on new playground equipment. The children have a place to come and take a break from the classrooms and to build new friendships. The new equipment is located further from occupied classrooms, contributing to a quieter learning environment in the classrooms. Volunteers from the local Navy Sea Bees and the maintenance staff from the School spent many hours installing the equipment and provided the needed equipment and supplies to complete the job.
Children at the Gardenside Elementary School enjoy recess playing on their new playground equipment.
