Outline of Need:
Barbara Tuggle wanted to provide a good home for her eight-year-old son Dalton. The home she had rented for two years was in poor condition and in a neighborhood where it wasn't safe for Dalton to play outside. There were holes in the floor that Barbara had to cover to keep out unwanted visitors. The house was cold in the winter and hot in the summer — the walls and ceiling had no insulation. Barbara put a lot of work into the house trying to make it a decent place for her son. But being a single mother with a limited income made it difficult, and she wasn't able to purchase a home with traditional financing.
How Rural Development Helped:
Barbara heard from one of her co-workers that Rural Development offers 100 percent homeownership loan financing to eligible applicants (learn more about this program). Based on her modest income, repayment ability and acceptable credit history, Rural Development was able to assist Barbara in purchasing her dream home in Milton, Florida.
The Results:
Barbara and her son moved into their new home in September 2004. Dalton has his own room and “lots of friends my age to play with,” he said. Barbara said, “This is a dream come true for me, because this is my home and no one can tell me I have to move because it is condemned.”
