Success Stories: Disabled Homeowner Realizes the American Dream

Outline of Need:

At the closing are (Left to Right): Glenn Blair, Rural Development; Connie Fazio, Conservator (mother); John Wilson, New Homeowner; and Craig Sanborn, Penobscot Nation.John Wilson is a disabled member of the Penobscot Nation whose only income sources are Social Security and a stipend through the Indian Trust Fund. With minimal income, John had no hope of obtaining homeownership.

How Rural Development Helped:

Through the assistance of Rural Development's Single Family Housing Program (click here to learn more about this and other programs), along with Payment Assistance and forgivable debt assistance from the Penobscot Nation Housing Authority, John was able to attain homeownership. Funds were provided to cover the purchase price, plumbing repairs, and closing costs.

The Results:

John Wilson relaxes in his new home.Mr. Wilson can live independently in his own home close to other family members. A closing for his new home was held March 10, 2005. Homeownership was made possible through the partnership with Rural Development and the Penobscot Nation Housing Authority. Without this joint funding venture, Mr. Wilson would not have the means to fund the purchase of his own home.
