Outline of Need:
Johnston County North Carolina native Dorothy Sanders applied to USDA Rural Development for assistance to make repairs to her home. At the age of 63, Ms. Sanders had extreme medical conditions from a recent stroke. With limited Social Security income, she lacked financial resources to meet her emergency home heating needs. Ms. Sanders used a space heater after her heating system stopped and wasn't repairable. The space heater burned outlets and overheated breakers creating extreme safety hazards.
How Rural Development Helped:
Rural Development was able to provide a $7,500 home repair grant (learn more about this program) through hardship funding in order to install a heating system, repair the electrical panel box, burned wiring and outlets, replace missing window panes, install storm windows and doors and handicap railings along the porch and steps for accessibility to the house.
The Results:
As a result of the grant obtained through USDA Rural Development, the emergency repairs were made to Ms. Sanders's home, allowing a safe warm environment for her as well as mobility in and out of the house with assistance of handicap railings. her electric expense was cut in half as a result of the repairs made to her home.
